Youth at St. John’s

Youth

St. John’s Youth Group is a small but mighty community in which all are made welcome and all are free to be themselves. For some, Youth Group is their experience of Church each week. Our Wednesday evening meetings begin with a shared meal during which we catch up with one another; our meal conversations are often loud and enthusiastic, reflecting a true family meal, but eventually, we settle down into the work of the evening. Each meeting includes some sort of lesson as well as worship. Currently, we are looking at ‘hot topic’ issues, such as bullying and social media, through the lens of the theological and cardinal virtues.

Our conversations are always animated, and, we have been able to plumb the depths of our own lives and experiences with honesty, respect and trust.
We begin the program year with a weekend retreat during which we relax, play, and dream of what we’d like to do in the upcoming year. All youth are included in the retreat and, for the second year in a row, the church has covered the cost of the participants.

This last summer we joined Sierra Service Project in its work in San Diego. We spent a week working on the homes of folks who, for whatever reason, were not able to undertake the repairs themselves. We were also privileged to spend time visiting with immigrants from other countries, as well as journey to Tijuana and hear from those who had been deported from the United States.

Whether it is undertaking the 30 hour famine for World Vision, playing paintball, or participating in the Youth Eucharist honoring our graduating seniors, St. John’s Youth are engaged in the world around them as serve, play, and worship. Come and see!
